San Giorgio del Porto reconverts a support vessel into a rescue unit for Emergency: the agency assisting the shipowner is Medmar Tramp
In 2022, Medmar Tramp acted as Emergency’s shipping agent during work on the Life Support, a research vessel converted by the San Giorgio del Porto shipyard in Genoa to enter service as a rescue unit for migrants who risk their lives during Mediterranean Sea crossings to reach Europe. It will accommodate up to 175 people plus 27 crew members, and began its first mission in November off the coast of Libya.
Built in 2002, the ship was originally conceived as a support vessel for the Norwegian oil platforms. More recently, it was purchased by Emergency following the donations received from private individuals. Totalling almost three million euro, the donations also covered the costs of the work carried out by the Genova Industrie Navali group shipyard, of which Finsea is a partner.
